Entry requirements

Prerequisites

  • a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in health or social work, plus 1 years full-time equivalent relevant work experience in a mental health setting, or
  • a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in any discipline, plus 2 year full-time equivalent relevant work experience in a mental health setting, or
  • a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Mental Health from UQ, plus 5 years full-time equivalent relevant work experience in a mental health setting. 

You must have a grade point average (GPA) of 4.0 on a 7-point scale in your previous qualification.
For the Art Therapy field of study, you'll also need:
  • to meet the Art Practice entrance standard, and
  • to meet the Clinical Experience entrance standard, and
  • to attend an interview, and
  • hold a current Blue Card (working with children check) or equivalent professional registration before commencing the program, and retain for the duration of your enrolment in the program.

Why study the Master of Mental Health?

The Master of Mental Health provides systematic training designed to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes relevant to contemporary mental health practice. Candidates receive advanced training in a variety of evidence based interventions and the theoretical principles that underpin them. Teaching is provided by highly experienced practitioners and/or researchers, many of whom have national or international reputations for scholarship and/or professional practice. Students have the opportunity to undertake both structured and independent learning assignments and study in a flexible environment that respects concurrent professional commitments. The mode of study and the location where courses are offered will vary depending on the field of study chosen. Please refer to the entry information for fields of study for more information. This is particularly important for international students as on and off campus requirements vary between fields of study.

What you can study

Domestic students undertake the program on a part-time basis over a minimum of 2 years. International students may only undertake the program on a full-time basis over 1.5 years.

What you can do with a Master of Mental Health

Careers

This program is designed to enhance the skills of the mental health professional workforce. It is anticipated that successful graduates would have enhanced employability and opportunities for advancement. The Art Therapy stream meets the requirements for professional registration with ANZACATA, the Australian, New Zealand and Asian Creative Arts Therapies Association. The Psychotherapy stream is recognised by a variety of associations and registration board as an advanced qualification in mental health allowing specialist practice. It is recommended that students check with their own associations or registration bodies for further information. Graduates are also able to become members of a variety of psychotherapy and counselling associations as specialist practitioners should they choose.

To complete the Master of Mental Health

To graduate with a Master of Mental Health a student must have successfully completed all requirements of the program as certified by the Executive Dean. This includes courses to be taken to complete the program and any other specific conditions of the program including admission, enrolment and progression requirements.
