Why study the Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours)?
This program educates the next generation of dental professionals at the Oral Health Centre, a $138 million state-of-the-art tertiary oral health facility in Australia.
With a focus on smaller cohorts and dedicated and specialist teachers, you will not only learn the science and acquire the technical skills to care for patients and prevent, diagnose, treat oral diseases & abnormalities, but also master the technical skills and knowledge needed to provide quality oral healthcare and make a genuine difference to the lives of others.
This program ensures graduates will be workforce ready. You will commence learning in a simulated environment from your first semester and develop knowledge which provide the clinical and biomedical foundations relevant to dentistry. You will gain in depth theoretical knowledge and complete approximately 1,900 hours of practical placements in a variety of clinical settings with the possibility of a clinical placement in Government and Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Health Service clinics throughout Queensland or interstate.
What you can study
This program provides you with the knowledge, skills and attitudes you require to become a competent practitioner of dentistry. These include the application of scientific principles to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases and abnormalities.
The first two years of the program deliver knowledge in the basic sciences which provide the clinical and biomedical foundations relevant to dentistry. Clinical work commences in third year and this experience is broadened in fourth year. Each student is assigned patients and is then responsible for the dental care of these patients.
Clinical work in areas such as general practice dentistry, orthodontics, paediatric dentistry, endodontics, periodontics and prosthodontics is undertaken at the Oral Health Centre. Students also gain experience in the areas of oral medicine and oral and maxillofacial surgery in Brisbane teaching hospitals. The final year of study provides clinical experience which may be undertaken in Government and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community health service clinics.

Placement courses
You will undertake approximately 1,900 hours of supervised clinical practice in a range of clinical settings including the new Oral Health Centre (OHC) as well as government and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Service clinics. During your placements, you will have the opportunity to apply your theoretical knowledge acquired through coursework to practice and develop your clinical skills in real life setting.
You will commence pre-clinical (simulated) placements from semester one of the program and will move into clinics treating patients from year three.
Clinical placements may be outside of the Brisbane metropolitan area where you will be required to fund your travel, accommodation and daily living expenses.

Honours will be awarded to all graduates of this program.

International students who are currently enrolled in a different UQ program and are seeking to program change to the BDSc(Hons) should lodge a new application with International Admission as early as possible, and no later than 31st October in the year prior to commencement. As places are limited, students who submit an internal program change request via mySi-net cannot be guaranteed an offer, even if pre-requisites are met.

- Students are expected to fund travel and living expenses associated with placements, some of which may be outside the Brisbane metropolitan area.

Once you're registered with the Dental Board of Australia, you can establish your own private practice, work within an established practice, or join a partnership.
Within the public sector, there are opportunities to work within hospitals, community health services, or school based dental clinics across Australia. The Australian Defence Force also accepts dental officers on either a short service or permanent basis.
