Minor studies are available in applied linguistics, Chinese, computer science/information technology, English, French, general maths, general science, German, health and physical education, history, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Music, Philosophy, Spanish, studies of religion, and studies of society and the environment.

Compulsory Placement Courses

Students are required to complete 80 days of supervised practicum and 40 days of internship over the 4 years of the program. Every effort is made to place students within a reasonable distance of their home base but they can be expected to travel up to 90 minutes due to public transport connections and incur costs associated with travel and possible lost income over this period. Students are generally placed at Ipswich, Brisbane, and southeast Queensland and are encouraged to explore the option of a rural placement. Financial assistance may be available to assist with travel and accommodation costs for rural placements.

Students are required to have a current Blue Card (Working with Children Check) before commencing practicum. Students can apply for a Blue Card through the School of Education and should do so three months before their practicum is due to commence. The Teacher Preparation Programs Handbook provides information about practicum and school experience requirements and is available from School of Education.

The LANTITE is not yet a requirement for graduation or registration for students in Queensland. We are encouraging our final year students to sit the test this year. Successfully completing the literacy and numeracy test may be advantageous to our students' future employment prospects, particularly if they are planning to teach in other States or Territories that have made the test compulsory from 2016. The University has made a significant commitment to our initial teacher education programs and students in undertaking to meet students' expenses in sitting the test. A student is required to obtain 64 units from the Bachelor of Education (Primary) list.

Note that students are required to take 8 units of electives, of which 4 units must be curriculum electives and 4 units are free electives.

Curriculum electives are assessed by the School of Education. Please contact the school for advice about elective courses. Courses that may be considered as being related to one of the curriculum areas are: Maths, English, Science, Health and Physical Education, the Arts (Music, Visual Arts, Dance, Drama and Media and Film), Technology, Design, History, Geography Civics, Economics, some Business courses and selected Languages other than English. Courses that may not be considered towards curriculum areas are: Psychology, social work, clinical studies such as physiotherapy, speech therapy, nursing, and midwifery.
