Course description

This course will provide students with interdisciplinary and critical perspectives on project management and development effectiveness. Students will learn the diverse approaches to project design and management, including standard tools (such as stakeholder analysis, community profiles, needs assessment, gap analysis, Logical Framework Analysis, monitoring and evaluation) including alternative and participatory approaches. The course will introduce and critically evaluate these diverse approaches to management and effectiveness evaluation, including in the context of contemporary challenges of direct relevance to development practice, such as climate change, rising inequality, food insecurity and health challenges. The course will pay attention to power relations, including gender inequalities and other forms of disadvantage, and consider how these impact project design, management and effectiveness. A primary focus of this course will be to introduce students to recent critiques and debates about project management and development practice. This is a cross cutting course, which will equip students with the interdisciplinary and critical skills to navigate the emerging development practice and planning space.
