Course description
A century ago sociologists were most concerned with how Western countries had made the transition from traditional to modern, capitalist societies. Half a century ago sociologists were debating how other developing societies might follow their paths, in spite of the disadvantages and obstructions facing latecomers. Today, alternative, sustainable and post development thinkers challenge us to think differently about development, including the option of rejecting the development project, on the basis of the social, economic and environmental challenges it gives rise. In this context too, one of the pressing issues to emerge is whether globalisation will continue to have its way in a post-colonial era, especially given the diverse forms of global resistance, as communities seek to chart a just and fair future.
