Course description
An advanced course which deals with the theory and practice of qualitative research. A core focus will be the observation, recording and analysis of naturally occurring social interaction. This will be achieved through theoretical coverage of the verstehen tradition, symbolic interactionism, ethnomethodology and conversation analysis. Specific methodological issues addressed include ethnography and observational techniques, visual research methods, semiotics and textual analysis of documentary materials and the application of conversation analysis principles to transcripts of audio recordings of interactions.
