Course description
An advanced course which deals with the theory and practice of qualitative research. A core focus will be the observation, recording and analysis of naturally occurring social interaction. This will be achieved through theoretical coverage of the verstehen tradition, symbolic interactionism and ethnomethodology. Specific methodological issues addressed include ethnography and observational techniques, visual research methods, semiotics and textual analysis of documentary materials. Training in the qualitative software package, NVivo, will also be provided and some classes will take place in the computer labs later in the semester.
