Course description
The analysis of texts is a core aspect of numerous academic disciplines and has significant applications in education and the private sector. This course introduces students to the computational study of texts, commonly referred to as text analysis or corpus linguistics. Over the past decades, corpus linguistics has evolved both as an independent field and as a crucial methodological approach across the language sciences, including research on language acquisition, learning, variation, and change, as well as language use.
By enabling the exploration of large-scale textual data¿ranging from learner essays and transcriptions of everyday conversations to historical documents¿corpus linguistics has contributed to more empirically grounded linguistic theorizing. This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental concepts, origins, and methods of corpus linguistics and text analysis, emphasizing hands-on experience.
Designed as a postgraduate-level course, it guides students in compiling corpora (collections of language samples) and applying corpus linguistic techniques to analyse texts, particularly in the areas of language use, learning, and teaching. Through practical engagement with text collections, computational methods, and applied linguistic research examples, students will develop the skills needed to analyse diverse textual data sources, with a special focus on learner data.
