Course description
Writing is a key component in second language teaching, learning and use. Teaching second language writing encompasses a range of educational contexts from school and university to professional writing courses. This course attempts to provide (i) foundational information on the emergence and subsequent evolution of this field of inquiry, (ii) state-of-the-art surveys of available theoretical and research (basic and applied) insights, (iii) overviews of research methods and approaches in L2 writing research, (iv) critical reflections on future developments, and (iv) explorations of existing and emerging disciplinary interfaces and intellectual bridges with other fields of inquiry. In particular, the course has a strong practical component, utilizing the latest in technology to allow students to construct and share collaborative writing tasks online, observations of real practicing L2 writing teachers at work, and the design of authentic L2 writing materials for a textbook unit with instructions from a real publishing brief.
