Course description

This course provides students with an understanding of ethical practice, legal requirements, codes of practice (relevant to FOS) and ethical decision making. Different aspects of ethical practice will be examined including therapist boundaries and behaviour, scope of practice and competency issues, report writing and record keeping. The complaints and investigation mechanisms both statutory and voluntary will be examined. Statistics of ethical breaches and consequences for mental health clinicians in Australia will be reviewed. Students will then engage with the ethical codes of their profession and deal with complex scenarios that will involve the application of ethical decision making models. The second part of this course will focus on ethical practice by gaining an understanding of the client perspective and experience of treatment settings and the way this can negatively impact on them and how to maintain appropriate therapeutic boundaries in complex settings. Likewise the ethics of working with diversity and difference in client preferences and presentations will be emphasised.
