Course description
The idea that conflict can be resolved non-violently is foundational to the field of peace and conflict studies. This course explores the philosophies and practice of nonviolence as a means for effecting political and social change. Making extensive use of case studies we study the relationship between violence and nonviolence in particular sites of conflict, and the shape and efficacy of nonviolent resistance movements. Students will gain a practical appreciation of how non-violent aims and outcomes are linked and the wide repertoire of non-violent strategies which range from public protest to the deployment of new technologies and social media.
