Course description

This course explores key democratic institutions, practices and phenomena and asks students to consider and analyse developments in individual countries as well as comparatively. The course consists of two modules. The first of these ¿ Institutions, Actors and Approaches ¿ offers students the opportunity to add new knowledge about political parties, electoral systems, campaigning and voting, while the second - Key Phenomena, Debates and Case Studies ¿ delves into some of the critical challenges that democracies are confronting such as the rise of the populist radical right, political polarisation, and considers significant case studies of political action and protest such as Black Lives Matter.
