Course description

THIS COURSE WILL BE OFFERED IN SUMMER SEMESTER 2014 from Monday 5th January to Friday 16 January 2015. For more information please contact Dr Graeme Were g.were@uq.edu.au, 336 52167. Current debates in museums and museum studies have focused on how collaborations between museums and communities can foster community cohesion and identity strengthening. Through inclusive strategies such as education outreach, co-curating, and other participatory activities, the museum has taken on a new civic role in community development. This field school ¿ situated in Vietnam ¿intends to workshop this important area through a series of case studies, hands-on activities and problem-based learning scenarios in key museum institutions in the cities of Hanoi and Danang. The overall aim is to bring together academics and museum professionals in Australia and Vietnam to constructively discuss address particular themes, issues and challenges and so foster new dialogues on museological practice and theory from a cross-cultural context. A major outcome of this field school will be to develop an empirical understanding of the relation between museums and community development in the South-East Asian context through dialogue, discussion and collaboration.
