Course description
This course will provide a critical overview of the history and formation of the museum and its role in contemporary society. It will explore the different contexts through which the museum can be understood, beginning with objects and collecting, towards an analysis of the museum as an institutional, exhibitionary and architectural space. It will consider various themes raised by museums, including communities and representation, cultural rights, memory and repatriation, the digital economy; before thinking about alternative models of the museum and possible futures. The course involves a weekly lecture, followed by a seminar discussion, which students are expected to prepare readings in advance for discussion.
