A series of five assignments and two projects involving composition of diverse vocal and instrumenta l works that demonstrate analytical and critical comprehension of the principles of Renaissance and Baroque polyphonic genres. Each assignment requires mastery of specific idioms and compositional pro cedures in small-scale polyphonic forms, while the projects demonstrate mastery of large-scale compo sitional planning in Baroque two part inventions and three-part fugues

Study of the compositional techniques of Renaissance and Baroque polyphony with associated analytical & writing exercises in vocal and instrumental contrapuntal styles. Please note that this course offering may be cancelled if fewer than 10 students enrol.
