Course description
In this course students will be introduced to health, health care and health service delivery in the community. Students will also be introduced to key aspects of public health medicine practice from a community perspective. Major topics include: the application of public health principles and perspectives; public health assessment and understanding risk; social determinants of health; community interventions; health services; and the social organisation of health care. The research component of this course will build on the research skills learned in Year 1 and focus on writing a research proposal. The main purpose of a research proposal is to show that the proposed problem (the research question) warrants investigation, i.e. that the methods are suitable and feasible, the findings are likely worthwhile and will make an original contribution to the area of research. Considering the various components of a proposal provides the researcher with a structured and comprehensive approach to defining the research project and ensures that all the necessary components are addressed. These components include the background to the research problem, the research question, the project¿s rationale, a preliminary literature review, the proposed methodology, the project plan and timeline, and the proposed outcomes of the research.
