Course description

Course not available until 2022. MARS2001 Methods in Marine Science will provide students with knowledge and skills critical for their careers in the real world, focussing on cutting-edge marine science, and developing potential solutions to the grand challenges facing the world's coasts and oceans. This second level course will build upon the conceptual foundations introduced, and the skills developed, in MARS1001 Living Oceans (a prerequisite) or an equivalent course. In addition to interactive lectures and expert guest lectures and tutorials, this course focusses on the development of hands-on practical skills and field experiences that will include student-driven exercises and projects. This will include a multi-day field trip to Moreton Bay Research Station, where students will engage in interdisciplinary exercises and state-of-the-art research projects focussed on practical methods for studying the physical, chemical, biological and ecological characteristics of coastal and ocean habitats. Through a series of written, oral, laboratory and field exercises, MARS2001 will develop practical skills and deliver core content that prepare students for advanced third-level undergraduate courses in Marine Biology, and Coastal and Ocean Science Majors in the BSc, and importantly also for the marine work force.
