Assessment methods

Four written assessment tasks that range from analysing the craft of writing, developing perspective taking, writing opening scenes and a synopsis and submitting to a creative writing competition. The assessment has been designed to: a) Expose students to the craft of writing b) Promote maximum choice of 3 creative writing styles: novel, novella, poetry c) Develop a community of writers by insisting on attendance and participation A minimum hurdle requirement of 80% attendance and regular participation in workshops is required. All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.

Course description

A creative writing course for medical students that aims to develop skills in observation, communication, description, and self-expression. This course has particular emphasis on building compassion and empathy towards patients through perspective-taking in narrative stories. Special Features: The course is taught by leading creative writing authors who are based at or affiliated with the University of Queensland: A/Prof Kim Wilkins, Dr Nick Earls, Shastra Deo, and Charlotte Nash.
