Course description
Jane Austen is one of the best known, and most loved, authors in the English language--perhaps second only to Shakespeare in global reach and influence. This course enables students to explore her novels in depth and also to examine some of the remarkable fictions -- novels, films, and TV series among them -- that are testament to her enduring impact on literature and culture. Along the way we will investigate Austen's relation to the literary and artistic fashions of her own day and to the political and social struggles of her time, as well as her ongoing literary influence, critical reception, and broader cultural transmission.
