Course description
Jane Austen is one of the best known, and most loved, authors in the English language--perhaps second only to Shakespeare in global reach and influence. We will explore four of her novels alongside two of the remarkable fictions that testify to her enduring literary influence and impact on literature and culture. We will take into account Austen's relation to the contexts of her own day, literary and artistic as well as political and social, as well as the way we read Austen now.
