Course description
The primary objective of this course is to enable students to get a better understanding of community media, alternative media (including social media) and information and communication technology (ICT) applications in context, especially as they relate to social change and development. It will specifically deal with the political and economic drivers that accompany and condition the deployment of these media in development and soial change. Using case studies and examples from both Australia and globally (particularly the South Asia region), the course will give students an opportunity to understand the uses of electronic, print and alternative/traditional media in activist practice and to assess whether or not media has been successful in supporting key development initiatives through the enhancement of a climate of positive social change. Ranging across a variety of media experiences, from community radio, social media and ICTs, students will be able to reflect on the role media has in development, whether that role is always constructive, and how people can be empowered through their own access to modern media technologies.
