Course description

To provide an advanced version of CHEM3001 Organic Chemistry for the B Advanced Science Cohort coupled with the CHEM3001 practical component. In particular this course will provide a focus on authentic research based experiences for students. One of the existing practical write ups will be replaced with a journal article submission exercise where students are required to choose a journal to "submit" to, use the journals article template to prepare the prac write up as a journal article, choose reviewers and participate in reviewing an article written by another student. This exercise will introduce students to the idea of evaluating different journals for their relevance and their quality and give them a more realistic idea of what is required to publish chemistry research in a peer reviewed journal. We will also provide less structured opportunities to discuss research opportunities in the school, provide tours of research facilities and discuss career options associated with research qualifications.
