Course description
This course develops knowledge and skills in cross-cultural communication through engagement with contemporary art by Indigenous people of the Australia Pacific region. Students learn how the art expresses Indigenous perspectives in ways that differ to, and often exceed, written communication. Lecture topics introduce the socio-political and cultural context of the modern Indigenous art movement in the region; theoretical approaches to cross-cultural aesthetics; and how Indigenous art has altered art institutions and markets around the world. Arts & Culture Sector professional skills are addressed in lectures and workshops on understanding Indigenous cultural protocols, First Nations arts networks, and debates related to the Indigenous art industry and market.
