Course description
This course provides higher-level archaeology students with intensive research into topical areas of the discipline. It is taught in seminar mode involving individual and group problem based learning, literature analysis and peer interaction.
This course is designed to provide advanced training in archaeological method, theory and research design. It will be beneficial for those students continuing to Honours as the course will provide an opportunity to explore archaeological topics of interest and receive feedback on problem design and research strategies. We will be examining the archaeological assemblages obtained during the archaeologial field school so students can see the range of artefacts and faunal materials from an entire site. Depending on what is recovered from the recent excavations, students can be exposed to practical lab work in palaeobotany, faunal analysis, lithic technology and use, and historical archaeology.
Students are required to compile an annotated bibliography of 15 references, write a 2250-word research proposal appropriate for Honours, give a seminar-style presentation and present a printed poster of their research project. Students are required to participate in seminar discussions. There are no exams.
This course is a prerequisite for Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Archaeology, and Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Archaeological Science.
