Course description
A survey of Rome¿s history and society as it transformed from a small city-state to an empire encompassing the Mediterranean. The course pays special attention to the elite that oversaw this expansion (including the Gracchi, Sulla, Caesar, and Augustus) but also considers life for the average citizen. The course investigates the causes and impacts of the political change that accompanied expansion ¿ and threatened to tear the Republic apart. We will use ancient texts, archaeological remains and the results of cutting-edge scientific analyses to reconstruct the processes that changed the face of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East forever. This course may not run if there are fewer than 20 enrolments.
