Entry requirements

Prerequisites

  • a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in a different discipline, from an approved tertiary institution that meets the requirements for two teaching areas of the secondary curriculum in Australian schools (see below), and
  • to submit a statement addressing non-academic criteria (see below), and
  • to complete an online questionnaire to meet the non-academic entry requirement for this program. Once you have submitted your application, you will be directed to the online questionnaire.

You must have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 4.5 on a 7-point scale in your previous qualification.
As part of the Australian Institute for Teaching and Leadership (AITSL) revised Standards and Procedures (2015), applicants to initial teacher education courses (pre-service teachers) must satisfy both academic and non-academic entry criteria for selection to the course. Why study the Master of Teaching (Secondary)?

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) is a teacher preparation program specifically designed for people with an undergraduate degree to qualify as a secondary school teacher in 2 years of full-time study. The program offers practical, school-based learning and draws on the latest research into effective teaching methods, ensuring graduates are well equipped to meet the challenges of a teaching career. The program will develop knowledge and skills, and the application of knowledge and skills required at masters level in education. This program encourages active engagement with local and global communities to promote the continuing enhancement of learning for the benefit of all and is ideal for those looking for a career change or who wish to follow their passion for teaching.

Two teaching areas: Biology; Business; Chemistry; Drama; English; Geography; History; Languages other than English (Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Spanish); Mathematics; Music; Physics; Earth and Environmental Sciences; as well as: Mathematics - Advanced; Choral and Instrumental Music; Economics; Film, Television and New Media; Legal Studies; Psychology.

Placement courses

Students undertaking the Master of Teaching (Secondary) program must complete 75 days of professional experience placement, comprising of: 5 days of school experience/observation and 70 days of supervised and assessed professional experience throughout the program.

Every effort is made to place students within a reasonable distance of their home but you can be expected to travel up to 90 minutes one-way due to public transport connections and incur costs associated with travel and possible lost income. Students are generally placed at Ipswich, Brisbane, and south-east corner of Queensland (including the Gold and Sunshine Coasts) and are also encouraged to consider a rural placement.

Students must have a current Blue Card (Working with Children Check) before commencing practicum, and should apply for one through the School of Education three months before their first professional experience.   • There may be additional course costs associated with travel or materials.
  • Students are expected to fund travel and living expenses associated with placements, some of which may be outside the Brisbane metropolitan area.
  • All students are required to successfully meet the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) standards prior to graduation.

What you can do with a Master of Teaching (Secondary)

Careers

Graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) as a teacher, to work as a secondary school teacher in Queensland. QCT registration could be used to apply for permission to work as a teacher in other Australian states/territories or internationally. With further study and experience this can lead to roles as a head of department, principal, guidance officer, learning support teacher, or student advisor. If you choose to undertake a specialisation in music or a Language Other Than English (Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Spanish) there is also the opportunity to work in primary school education.

To complete the Master of Teaching (Secondary)

To graduate with a Master of Teaching (Secondary) a student must have successfully completed all requirements of the program as certified by the Executive Dean. This includes courses to be taken to complete the program and any other specific conditions of the program including admission, enrolment and progression requirements.
