Why study the Doctor of Medicine?
The MD is a postgraduate medical program designed to produce highly skilled doctors capable of meeting future medical challenges in a wide variety of settings.
Phase 1 (years 1 and 2) combine biomedical sciences, public health, medical ethics and clinical skills training in a case-based learning context, focused around a series of patient-centered cases, each designed to highlight principles and issues in health and disease. Early patient contact, clinical reasoning and research training are embedded to develop advanced clinical skills and medical knowledge required for evidence-based clinical practice.
In Phase 2 (years 3 and 4) clinical placements are organised around ten core medical disciplines delivered across fifteen clinical units in South East and rural Queensland, and the Ochsner Clinical School in the United States.
Students may also enhance learning with research higher degree and medical leadership program opportunities.

Placement courses
Placements are an integral component of the MD program. Students complete a 4 week Observership at the end of Year 1 and in Phase 2 (years 3 & 4) they undertake 10 core clinical placements in varied disciplines, as well as a final year elective. The Phase 2 placements are delivered by our Clinical Units in South-East and Rural Queensland. Domestic students are eligible to undertake placements at both the Metropolitan and Rural Units, while International students undertake their placements in the Metropolitan Units.
Opportunities are embedded in the program for students to undertake placements overseas or interstate. These include the Observership, Elective and for international students, the Rural and Remote Medicine placement that can be undertaken at a rural location in their home country. Further opportunities are available for students planning to practice overseas following graduation by way of pre-approved placements within our network of partners, such as Queen's University in Canada. In addition, students have the option to undertake placements at the UQ Ochsner Clinical School located in New Orleans, USA and optional elective placements that fall outside of the curriculum.

Entry requirements for International students

Additional application requirements
Direct Entry for Graduates: International applicants apply via UQ International, or through an Educational Representative. The key degree must have been completed within the ten year period preceding the proposed commencement date. Applicants must also achieve a minimum score in the GAMSAT (50 in each section) or MCAT (minimum total of 504). The GAMSAT result must be gained in the 2 years preceding the year of commencement and MCAT 3 years.
The minimum MCAT score required to be eligible for an application is reviewed annually.
Provisional Entry for School Leavers: International applicants completing Year 12 in Australia may apply through QTAC, sitting the UCAT exam. All other applicants must apply via UQ International, or through an Educational Representative. A score of 60+ in each section of ISAT is required. Provisional entry medicine students must complete their first degree at UQ within the minimum time specified with a program GPA of 5.00 and complete two subject prerequisites by the time of enrolment into the MD program.
English language proficiency: For IELTS, an overall band score of 7 AND a minimum score of 7 in each sub-band of writing, reading, speaking and listening is required. This program requires a higher level of English language proficiency than the UQ minimum.

To complete the Doctor of Medicine
To fulfil the requirements of the Doctor of Medicine, a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.
There are a number of requirements that students must meet prior to the program
- A current Blue Card (Working with Children Check)
- A current Criminal History Check
- A current First Aid Certificate (including CPR)
- Queensland Health checklist and student deed poll
- Evidence of immunisation
