Why study the Master of Nursing Studies?
This program has been specifically designed to prepare students within two years to apply to work as registered nurses in Queensland and will be offered to graduates of any other discipline who have achieved a Grade point Average of 4 or above. Graduates will: apply clinical reasoning skills in their nursing practice; be able to work effectively in interprofessional teams to promote quality health outcomes for clients in their care; provide high quality client centred care through safe and effective nursing practice according to the ANMC (Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council) National Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse; and possess the qualities, skills, knowledge and abilities expected of a University of Queensland graduate.
The program will be offered full time for two years with a fast track option of 18 months. MNStud (GE) follows a problem based learning model. Lecturers and resource sessions will be available online, however all Problem Based Learning tutorials, clinical laboratories and clinical practice will take place in clinical partner sites including the Wesley Hospital and St. Andrews War Memorial.
What you can study
Students complete 32 courses, 16 of which are clinical, or two days clinical practice per week for the first year, three days a week in the third semester, and five days per week in the final semester. There are 1010 hours of clinical practice throughout the program. Second year courses may be completed over the summer semester and first semester of the following year. The third semester can be undertaken part-time (the only part-time option in the course). Students will need to complete the Inter-professional practice Project in one semester and the four credit point clinical practice subject in the following semester, followed by the final extended clinical experience eight credit point course in the last semester.

Placement courses
It is a requirement Students hold a current Senior First Aid Certificate (including a CPR component) before commencing program. Students are required to comply with the School of Nursing and Midwifery Infectious Diseases and Immunisation Guidelines and provide serological evidence of their status with respect to blood-borne transmissible viruses (Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV).Students will also be required to undergo a National Criminal History Record check (Police Check) prior to clinical placement.
