Prerequisites
The Master of Dietetics Studies is focused on dietetics only. Applicants must have an approved degree and have completed tertiary studies in biochemistry, physiology and nutrition to meet the national standards accreditation requirements for dietetics (see additional application information). Entry is competitive based on GPA.
Additional application information
Prior approved studies must include:
- 4 units in EACH of public health nutrition (UQ Courses = NUTR3011 & NUTR3012) and nutrition science (UQ Courses = NUTR2101 & NUTR3201) at 2000 level or higher
- 4 units of physiology at 2000 level or higher or equivalent (this means that there needs to be a 4 semester sequence in anatomy/physiology). There are several pathways to the second level courses (UQ Courses = [BIOM2012 or BIOM2015] + [BIOM2011 or PHYL2730])
- 2 units in EACH of research methods (including statistical component) (UQ course = HMST3846), behavioural science (UQ course = PSYC1030 or equivalent) and food sciences of commodities (UQ course = FOOD2000)
- 8 units in chemistry/biochemistry including 4 units of biochemistry at 2000 level or higher (UQ courses = [CHEM1090 or CHEM1010 or CHEM1100] + [CHEM1020 or CHEM1200 or CHEM1021 or CHEM1221 or CHEM1022 or CHEM1222] + BIOC2000 + [BIOL3230 or BIOC3006])
Domestic students in the MDietSt may be eligible for income support and should contact Centrelink.
This program may have inherent requirements that need to be met prior to undertaking placement.
Students are required to provide evidence of immunisation against blood-borne transmissible viruses or other diseases, as outlined further in the School's immunisation schedule.
Students must obtain at the commencement of the program and thereafter hold for the duration of the program, a current Blue card.
For applicants who need to provide evidence of English proficiency, please note that this program requires a higher level of English language proficiency than the UQ minimum.

Why study the Master of Dietetics Studies?
This program will prepare you for eligibility as an Accredited Practising Dietitian with the Dietitians Association of Australia. There is a growing demand for qualified dietitians in both Australia and overseas due to an increasing awareness of the importance of food and nutrition in health and disease prevention.
What you can study
This program is designed for students with a background in nutrition science, public health nutrition, biochemistry, physiology and statistics. During your studies you will develop practical skills and knowledge in how to apply the art and science of human nutrition in the prevention and treatment of medical conditions such as diabetes, obesity and infectious diseases. You also develop the skills and knowledge to help people understand food and health relationships, enabling them to make better food choices to get the most out of their lifestyles.
Choose from a diverse range of courses and explore advanced topics and practices in dietetics and nutrition, such as mental health, rural health, paediatrics and private practice. If research is your passion, you can pursue this in your final semester and complete an innovative project alongside leading international researchers. You will also have the potential to contribute to the published scientific literature.

Placement courses
Students will undertake approximately 850 hours of supervised clinical practice in a range of clinical settings that includes hospitals, community nutrition units, aged care facilities and other public and private organisations. During their placements, students will have the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge acquired through coursework to practice and develop their clinical skills in real life setting.
Students will commence their clinical placements in semester two of the program. During the third and final semester students will undertake their final two major clinical placements.
Students may be required to undertake clinical placements outside of the Brisbane metropolitan area and students are required to fund their travel, accommodation and daily.
