Why study the Master of Arts (Advanced)?
The MA (Advanced) consists of #32 (5382) or #24 (5440) of coursework including an #8 dissertation, the latter to be taken either in a third or fourth semester. The program is currently available in the field of linguistics. Students examine key theories and issues about language. The degree is designed for postgraduates with no (or minimal) undergraduate linguistics training, and also provides a formal qualification for practicing field-linguists who wish to improve their theoretical knowledge. The program explores the structure and use of language in depth, with courses in semantics, phonology, phonetics, syntax, morphology, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and language variation and change. The Master of Arts (Advanced) program is designed for students wishing to undertake a long dissertation and gain entry into research higher degrees in the field of Linguistics.

Program rules for the Master of Arts (Advanced)
To complete the Master of Arts (Advanced)
To fulfil the requirements of the Master of Arts (Advanced), a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.
A student with a relevant 3 year degree is required to obtain #32 from the MA Course List in the chosen field.
A student with a relevant 4 year degree is required to obtain #24 from the MA Course List in the field of Linguistics to be determined in conjunction with the convenor of Linguistics.
