Applications for the program from domestic students should be submitted to QTAC. Applicants will be required to complete an interview where the teaching areas are languages other than English or music or the applicant is from a non-English speaking background. Please note that 2017 will be the last offering of this program.
The LANTITE is not yet a requirement for graduation or registration for students in Queensland. We are encouraging our final year students to sit the test this year. Successfully completing the literacy and numeracy test may be advantageous to our students' future employment prospects, particularly if they are planning to teach in other States or Territories that have made the test compulsory from 2016. The University has made a significant commitment to our initial teacher education programs and students in undertaking to meet students' expenses in sitting the test. Why study the Graduate Diploma in Education?
The Graduate Diploma in Education is a one-year teacher preparation program for students who already hold a tertiary degree. The program offers practical, school-based learning and draws on the latest research into effective teaching methods, ensuring graduates are well equipped to meet the challenges of a teaching career. Courses within the program will challenge participants to use their knowledge, expertise and experience to design learning environments that will engage students in the learning process and cater for a variety of learning styles. Participants learn to cooperatively and critically plan, design, implement and review relevant syllabi including developing teaching and learning strategies and curriculum materials. Graduates will have developed a personal theory of teaching that fully considers the role of teachers in the promotion of a socially just and inclusive society. This program encourages active engagement with local and global communities to promote the continuing enhancement of learning for the benefit of all.
2017 is the last offering of this program. All students, either commencing or continuing, should aim to complete the program by the end of semester 2, 2017.

Placement courses
Students undertaking the GDipEd(Secondary) must complete 75 days of supervised practicum scheduled in two extended blocks (7-8 weeks) - one in each semester of the program.
Effort is made to place students within a reasonable distance of their home but they can be expected to travel up to 90 minutes due to public transport connections and incur costs associated with travel and possible lost income. Students are generally placed in southeast Queensland but are encouraged to consider a rural placement. Financial assistance may be available to assist with travel and accommodation costs for rural placements.
Students must have a current Blue Card (Working with Children Check) before commencing practicum, and can apply for one through The School of Education three months before their practicum. Additional costs
- From 2018, all students are required to successfully meet the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) standards prior to graduation.
- UQ committed to fund test costs to the end of 2018. From 1 January 2019 this is no longer available and students must cover this cost. The 2018 fee was $185 ($92.50 per test). ACER lists current fees.

Careers
Graduates are eligible for teacher registration in Queensland and qualified for employment as teachers in state and independent schools worldwide. An education degree opens up a vast range of career opportunities within educational settings such as Head of Department, Principal, Guidance Officer, learning support teacher, student advisor and education advisor. The development of key competencies throughout the Graduate Diploma in Education program provides knowledge and skills sought by employers in business and industry, especially in areas where an understanding of program development and training are required.
