Additional application information

There are numbers of nurses currently working in advanced roles without endorsed qualification and formal recognition. It is expected that many of these nurses will be eligible for recognition of prior learning for previous studies or advanced clinical experience. Registered nurses who have completed a UQ Graduate Diploma in Health Studies or similar would be eligible for some credit in this program.

All courses are external, however, NURS7001 and NURS7003 each have a one-week compulsory residential in Brisbane.

Students must hold and keep current a senior first aid certificate for the duration of their program.

Why study the Master of Nurse Practitioner Studies?

This program prepares registered nurses for advanced and expanded roles in practice areas that represent areas of need in Australia's health: chronic disease management, general practice, young people's health, aviation nursing and rural and remote.

Students graduate from this program with the potential to apply to the Queensland Nursing Council for endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner. Graduates will develop skills that will enable them to work in a nurse practitioner role that includes assessment and management of clients using nursing knowledge and skills and may include but is not limited to the direct referral of patients to other health care professionals, prescribing medications, and ordering diagnostic investigations. Graduates' practice will be grounded in the nursing profession's values, knowledge, theories and practice and provides innovative and flexible health care delivery that complements other health providers. The scope of practice of the nurse practitioner is determined by the context in which the nurse practitioner is authorised to practice. Graduates will develop a life-long commitment to continuing education and an ability to contribute to the evolution of nursing knowledge.

Program rules for the Master of Nurse Practitioner Studies

To complete the Master of Nurse Practitioner Studies

To fulfil the requirements of the Master of Nurse Practitioner Studies, a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.

A student must obtain #24 from the MN Program list. This constitutes all of Part A (#8) and all of Part B in the chosen field (#10) plus #6 from the electives listed in Part C.
