An approved bachelor degree with demonstrated prior learning in the social and behavioural sciences (e.g. in social work, psychology, social welfare, behavioural studies, human services, nursing, therapies, medicine, or related fields).
Additional application information
Irrespective of professional background, entry to the program will be considered on the basis of previous academic study, experience and personal qualities.
Applicants are required to submit a certified copy of their university academic transcripts, a curriculum vitae, a personal statement, and supply the names and contact details for two referees^. Applicants may also be required to undertake an interview as part of the admission process.
^ Referees must be of a professional or academic nature, from a workplace or from any prior study. Referees cannot be provided by a near relative or close associate. Examples of near relatives are partner, child, brother, sister, or parent. Examples of close associates are close friends, neighbours and partners or children of colleagues.
Domestic students enrolled in the Master of Counselling may be eligible to receive income support payments and should contact Centrelink to determine eligibility.
This program may have inherent requirements that need to be met prior to undertaking placement.
Students will be required to obtain a Blue card prior to commencing their clinical placement.
For applicants who need to provide evidence of English proficiency, please note that this program requires a higher level of English language proficiency than the UQ minimum.

Why study the Master of Counselling?
This program will provide students with in depth knowledge and practical skills for a successful career in professional counselling. Taught in collaboration with UQ's School of Psychology, the program is well-established in Australia. It is accredited with both major professional associations (ACA and PACFA). The program has a strong focus on integrative approaches to counselling and applied psychotherapy that seek to effectively and respectfully enhance outcomes for people struggling with a range of challenges. These challenges may vary from intra-personal issues to inter-personal (relationship) and systemic problems across areas from prevention to clinical care.
What you can study
The program adopts an integrative theoretical and practical focus which incorporates many areas from person-centered to brain-based approaches. Students will develop knowledge, skills and competencies for professional practice in counselling and be able to competently support individuals, couples, families and groups in the community.

Placement courses
Students will undertake approximately 350 hours of supervised clinical practice in a range of clinical settings that includes hospitals and a variety of public and private agencies. During their placements, students will have the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge acquired through coursework to practice and develop their clinical skills in real life setting.
Students may be required to undertake clinical placements outside of the Brisbane metropolitan area and students are required to fund their travel, accommodation and daily living expenses.

Careers
The Master of Counselling provides career opportunities in human service settings such as health, welfare, community services, human resources and personnel management and private practice. It is well suited to people who work with individuals, families, groups and communities in many different fields and circumstances, such as loss and grief issues, mental health and well-being, domestic violence, sexual abuse, and drug and alcohol issues, relationship issues and others.
