Why study the Master of Speech Pathology Studies?
Speech pathology focuses on the management of communication and/or swallowing difficulties. Communication problems can occur in the areas of speech, language, voice, fluency (stuttering), hearing or literacy.
A speech pathologist assists people of all ages, from children to adults, who present with communication problems due to developmental delays, disease or injury such as stroke, hearing loss, traumatic brain injury, and intellectual disability. They also work with clients who have feeding or swallowing problems.
Study the Master of Speech Pathology Studies at UQ and you will learn from award-winning teachers, researchers and clinical educators who are among the best in Australia. This program will give you the theoretical knowledge, professional attributes, and clinical and research skills necessary for a career in speech pathology.
What you can study
This program is conducted over 2.5 years (5 semesters), beginning in July of each year. The first semester introduces students to the profession of Speech Pathology and its key concepts. Subsequent to this student will focus on the integration of theoretical knowledge and clinical skills, and includes clinical practicums that focus on paediatric and adult assessment and rehabilitation across a range of different practice areas and settings.

Placement courses
Students undertake over 550 hours of supervised clinical practice in a range of clinical settings that includes hospitals, educational facilities, other health care organisations, private practices and UQ's internal clinics. During their placements, students will have the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge acquired through coursework and research to practice and develop their clinical skills in real life settings.
Students will undertake a variety of sessional practical experiences from year one before commencing full time block placements during year two.
Students may be required to undertake clinical placements outside of the Brisbane metropolitan area and students are required to fund their travel, accommodation and daily living expenses.

Students may opt to undertake a research project in their final year.

To complete the Master of Speech Pathology Studies
To fulfil the requirements of the Master of Speech Pathology Studies, a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.
A student is required to obtain #40 from the MSpPathSt course list. Refer to the program rules for further information.
