Entry requirements

Prerequisites

A degree (other than speech pathology) in fields such as health, education, social, biological or physical sciences or humanities, with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0

Additional application information

Students must have completed a course in statistics and a course in one of: linguistics, psychology, or physiology in their previous degree.

This program starts in summer semester and is a full two years in duration, including a second summer semester.

For applicants who need to provide evidence of English proficiency, please note: this program requires a higher level of English language proficiency than the UQ minimum. IELTS overall 7; writing 6; speaking 8 is required.

Students are required to provide proof of immunisation against certain diseases, including hepatitis B before the commencement of study. A Senior First Aid Certificate (including CPR) and a Blue Card are also required before the commencement of clinical practice. Further details of these requirements will be provided with offer material.

There is a quota of 10 international places available. Offers will be made to applicants with the highest academic rank.

Why study the Master of Speech Pathology Studies?

This program equips graduate entry students with the theoretical knowledge, professional attributes, and clinical and research skills necessary for professional careers in speech pathology. In addition to focusing on clinical speech pathology practice, students' prior skills and knowledge are examined to enhance effectiveness of their clinical practice and to allow ongoing professional development.

What you can study

This program introduces graduates to the profession of Speech Pathology and its key concepts in intensive mode during an initial summer semester. It then focuses on the integration of theoretical knowledge and clinical skills, and includes clinical practicums that focus on paediatric and adult assessment and rehabilitation.

Placement courses

A six week full-time block of clinical practice occurs at the beginning of the second year of this program. Students are placed according to previous clinical experiences. Some students may be required to take up clinical placements outside the Brisbane metropolitan area and are expected to fund these placements independently. A range of locations for placements is utilised depending on availability, and allocation of students to these placements will be as equitable as possible. Students will only be placed within Queensland. It may be possible to arrange accommodation at local nurses quarters for a minimal cost. Overseas placements are not available.

Students are required to have a current Blue Card (Working with Children Check) before commencing clinical placements in first year. For information on obtaining a Blue Card, contact the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.

Students are required to complete a prescribed schedule of immunisations and to hold a current first aid and CPR certificate.

  • intellectual disability, autism or hearing loss;
  • general, paediatric and geriatric hospitals;

  • community health centres;

  • centres for the hearing impaired and intellectually disabled.

Program rules for the Master of Speech Pathology Studies

To complete the Master of Speech Pathology Studies

To fulfil the requirements of the Master of Speech Pathology Studies, a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.

A student is required to obtain #40 from the MSpPathSt List (including #4 for courses approved by the Head of School). Refer to the MSpPathSt rules for further information.
