Develop a strong knowledge foundation in the social science disciplines during your first year, in fields including anthropology, sociology, psychology, government, economics and philosophy. Students are also introduced to welfare and social issues in Australian society. You will develop professional skills in the following areas: Child, Youth and Family; Health and Ageing; or Mental Health. Each of these areas of study provide detailed insight into social work practice with particular groups, or in particular settings.

Students will undertake approximately 1000 hours of supervised clinical practice in a range of clinical settings that includes hospitals and a variety of public and private agencies. You will have the opportunity during your placements to apply your theoretical knowledge acquired through coursework to practice and develop their clinical skills in real life settings. You may also complete a rural, interstate or international placement in your final year. Clinical placements may be outside of the Brisbane metropolitan area where you will be required to fund your travel, accommodation and daily living expenses. Prior to applying, applicants should ensure they will be able to meet Bachelor of Social Work placement requirements

Many social workers practise in a variety of areas during their careers, including government agencies, child protection, drug and alcohol support clinics, Indigenous health and welfare agencies, residential care, community organisations, private practice and many other organisations, in roles such as: advocates or negotiators acting for people facing discrimination or unable to act for themselves community workers in local government or community organisations to bring about change and develop community support services in hospitals to help patients and their families cope with and adjust to their health conditions with individuals and families facing personal distress or crisis associated with family and personal relationships with those experiencing the loss of health or employment due to disability planning and management of social and welfare services in local, State and Federal government departments family therapists. Some of our more experienced graduates are CEOs of government and non-government organisations, policy officers, community development workers, international aid workers, family therapists, probation. This is an AASW accredited qualification. It is an entry qualification into the social work profession and has been determined to meet the Australian Social Work Education and Accreditation Standards (ASWEAS).
