Prerequisites

Year 12 English and Music OR AMEB Grade 7 or higher in a practical examination and AMEB Grade 5 or higher in Theory or Musicianship, or equivalent.

Additional application information

Students wishing to undertake the Bachelor of Music with Honours must lodge a program change request via SI-net by the Friday prior to Orientation week for first semester. To be eligible for consideration for entry to honours, a GPA of 5.8 over the first two years of BMus will be required.

Students wishing to undertake a specialisation in Music Education enrol in the Bachelor of Music(Hons)/Bachelor of Education, which is a five-year program.

The Class of Honours will be based on the GPA of #32 of courses as specified in the Course List for the selected major for years 3 and 4.

Why study the Bachelor of Music (Honours)?

The Bachelor of Music is intended for students wishing to pursue a professional career in music, and integrates the development of practical skills with theoretical and historical musical knowledge, culminating in advanced research training in their chosen Music Honours field. Graduates of the program are equipped to undertake postgraduate studies in music or to find employment in arts administration, librarianship and educational contexts.

Honours:

Students who intend to undertake the Bachelor of Music as an Honours program must apply to transfer into the Bachelor of Music (Honours) program after completion of 2 years full time study in the Bachelor of Music pass program. The class of honours will be based on the GPA of the #22 of courses comprising #14 for the selected major plus #8 for the selected Honours courses.

Program rules for the Bachelor of Music (Honours)

To complete the Bachelor of Music (Honours)

To fulfil the requirements of the Bachelor of Music (Honours), a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.

Students enrolled in the BMus (Hons) must complete #64 consisting of:

(i) #26 for Part A; and

(ii) at least #22 from Part B, comprising - (A) an extended major; or (B) 2 majors; or (C) a major and a minor; and

(iii) #8 from Part H; and

(iv) the balance from Part B and/or Part C or from other approved courses.

Before starting the program, a student must get the executive dean's approval for the chosen instrument. The executive dean must approve subsequent changes.
