Why study the Bachelor of Education (Middle Years of Schooling)?
The Bachelor of Education (Middle Years) is a four year pre-service teacher qualification designed for effective teacher preparation in the unique contemporary context. The program develops capacities required by teachers working in the information age, a time of rapid change where education is recognised as playing an increasingly important role in society. The program develops specialist teachers across the year levels 4-9, aligning with the Middle Phase of Learning. In particular, the program focuses on the development of skills, understandings and attributes that enable graduates to demonstrate specialist abilities with respect to:
- Literacy and numeracy
- Diversity and differentiated learning
- Leadership and research
- Connected practicum
What you can study
Minor studies are available in applied linguistics, Chinese, computer science/information technology, English, French, general maths, general science, German, health and physical education, history, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Music, Philosophy, Spanish, studies of religion, and studies of society and the environment.

Placement courses
Compulsory Placement Courses
Students are required to complete 80 days of supervised practicum and 40 days of internship over the 4 years of the program. Every effort is made to place students within a reasonable distance of their home base but they can be expected to travel up to 90 minutes due to public transport connections and incur costs associated with travel and possible lost income over this period. Students are generally placed at Ipswich, Brisbane, and southeast Queensland and are encouraged to explore the option of a rural placement. Financial assistance may be available to assist with travel and accommodation costs for rural placements.

To complete the Bachelor of Education (Middle Years of Schooling)
To fulfil the requirements of the Bachelor of Education (Middle Years of Schooling), a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.
To complete the program, a student must complete 64 units from the BEd(MidYsSch) course list including-
(a) all core courses; and
(b) either -
(i) a minor; or
(ii) 8 units of elective courses of which 4 units must be approved by the executive dean as directly related to one of the curriculum areas.
Students can undertake the program on a part time basis. However for periods of practicum placement, it is necessary for students to be substantially free during the day to meet practicum requirements. The final semester of the program requires full time attendance.
