The program is underpinned by an innovative, inquiry-based learning curriculum model which has been informed in international best practice by industry experts and responds to current national and global population health challenges. In the first 3 years of the program lectures and problem-based tutorials are incorporated with clinical experiences in selected partner teaching hospitals and health districts. In the final year of the program students undertake extensive preceptored clinical placement providing them with exposure to an area of specialty midwifery and nursing practice and the opportunity to consolidate and refine their skills in order to meet national competency standards for nurses and midwives and facilitate a smooth transition to graduate practice.

You will undertake more than 1000 hours of supervised clinical practice in a range of clinical settings that includes hospitals and a variety of health care organisation. You will have the opportunity during your placements to apply your theoretical knowledge acquired through coursework to practice and develop your clinical skills in real life settings. This includes 'continuity of care' experiences that are completed over the duration of the program. Providing continuity of care involves accompanying a woman and her family through the pregnancy, labour, birth and postpartum experience.

You'll also have opportunities to engage with innovative models of healthcare, such as telehealth. You will commence your clinical placements in the first year of the program. Over the first three years of the program you will normally complete multiple shorter placements incorporating 8-hour shifts and in the final year you will complete extended full time clinical placements in Nursing and Midwifery. Prior to applying, applicants should ensure they will be able to meet Bachelors of Nursing/Midwifery placement requirements.

As a registered nurse and midwife you can work in a variety of healthcare settings including: public, private or community healthcare clinical practice (metropolitan and rural) maternity and neo-natal care academia/clinical teaching or research health research health service management defence forces Australian and international aid organisations. paediatrics and child health. The dual qualification provides the opportunity to work as both a nurse and a midwife either independently or in tandem.
