Clinical placements commence in the first few weeks in first year. Students are 'buddied' with midwives for clinical learning throughout the program.
In each year of the program students are required to complete 10 'follow throughs' of women through their pregnancy, birth and postpartum periods.
For each final year of the program, students are required to undertake extensive clinical practice. This may preclude students from undertaking outside employment during the final two semesters.
Students seeking accommodation may wish to consider living in one of the colleges at colleges at St Lucia as a shuttle bus to the Ipswich campus is available.
This program requires a higher level of English language proficiency than the UQ minimum. IELTS overall 7; writing 6; speaking 7 is required. TOEFL test results are not accepted.

Why study the Bachelors of Nursing/Midwifery?
The BN/BMid is a four-year degree combining the stand alone Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Midwifery degrees, with an accelerated option to complete the program in 3.5 years.
This dual degree has been specifically designed to provide students with a broad set of skills that encompass the disciplines of nursing and midwifery. Graduates will be well prepared to work as both nurse and midwife in practice settings such as public health and education; rural and community hospitals as well as tertiary centres providing medical, surgical, gynaecology, oncology, neonatal intensive care and emergency mother and baby retrieval services which require a health professional who is both registered nurse and endorsed midwife.
The dual program is underpinned by the problem based learning curriculum model used in the individual degrees. This model has been informed by international best practice and industry experts and responds to current national and global population health challenges.
What you can study
In the first 3 years of the program lectures and problem-based tutorials are incorporated with clinical experiences in selected partner teaching hospitals and health districts. In the final year of the program students undertake extensive preceptored clinical placement providing them with exposure to an area of specialty midwifery and nursing practice and the opportunity to consolidate and refine their skills in order to meet national competency standards for nurses and midwives and facilitate a smooth transition to graduate practice.

Placement courses
It is a requirement students hold a current Senior First Aid Certificate (including CPR) before commencing the program. Students are required to comply with the School's Infectious Diseases and Immunisation Guidelines and provide serological evidence of their status with respect to blood-borne transmissible viruses (Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV). Carriers of blood-borne viruses would be unable to complete the clinical practice components of the program and thus not be eligible to apply for endorsement as a midwife. Students will also be required to undergo a National Criminal History Check (Police Check) prior to clinical placement. For further information on these requirements contact the School.
Every effort is made to place students in their preferred location which may include a travel radius of up to 90mins due to public transport connections.
Students are required to complete 1392hrs of supervised placement throughout the duration of their program. Students will be rostered to attend clinical placement on either morning (approx. 7am - 3pm) or afternoon shifts (approx. 2pm - 11pm) for 12-15 shifts of 8 hours duration, depending upon the clinical site. In the final year of the program students will also be required to attend night duty shifts (approx. 11pm- 7am).

Careers
Registered nurses work in a variety of public or private health care settings, academia/teaching, research, aid organisations, the defence forces and/or a combination of these areas.
Midwives work in a variety of public or private health care settings, maternity and neonatal care settings, academia/teaching, research, rural and remote health, aid organisations, and/or a combination of these areas.
The dual qualification provides the opportunity to work as both a nurse and a midwife either independently or in tandem.

To complete the Bachelors of Nursing/Midwifery
To fulfil the requirements of the Bachelors of Nursing/Midwifery, a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.
A student is required to obtain #64 comprising -
- #8 from the combined first semester core courses
- #32 from the BMid course list and
- #24 from the BN course list
