Additional application information
The Dental Board of Australia policy prevents dentists carrying blood-borne viruses from undertaking invasive procedures, the definition of which includes most aspects of clinical dentistry. Students are required to provide serological evidence of their status with respect to blood-borne transmissible viruses (Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV). Carriers of blood-borne transmissible viruses will not be permitted to be enrolled. Tuberculosis (TB) screening is also required in accordance with Queensland Health recommendations.
Students must have a current Blue Card (Working with Children Check) and undertake a police check for criminal history.
Students must complete a nationally accredited First Aid Certificate in year 1. Annual recertification of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) competency in years 2, 3 and 4 and First Aid recertification prior to the start of year 5 are also required.

Why study the Bachelor of Dental Science?
The University of Queensland Dental School has been providing dentists since 1937. It is the oldest and most established dental school in Queensland and has been located at Turbot Street, Brisbane since 1941.
The BDSc program has been accredited by the Australian Dental Council and provides students with the opportunity to spend the final year in State Government dental clinics throughout Queensland as well as in the new Oral Health Centre, enabling them to extend and further develop their clinical skills and experience before graduation.

In late 2012, the School is scheduled to move to the new Oral Health Centre at the UQ Herston campus. The Centre will be Australia's largest and most advanced tertiary oral health facility, combining research, education, training, and specialist expertise in patient care. Teaching facilities will include clinical simulation areas, pre-clinical laboratories, lecture/seminar rooms, and research laboratories.
What you can study
The program provides students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes they require to become competent practitioners of dentistry. These include the application of scientific principles to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases and abnormalities. Students are introduced to dental practice and oral rehabilitation in first year and also undertake courses in oral biosciences and biomedical foundations in oral health. The remaining four years of the program involve three years of applied dental science and one year of extramural clinical practice (34 weeks). Clinical work commences in second year and is broadened in the third and fourth years of study. Each student is assigned patients and is then responsible for the dental care of these patients. Clinical work in areas such as general practice dentistry, orthodontics, paediatric dentistry, periodontics and prosthodontics is undertaken at the Dental School. Students gain experience in the areas of oral medicine and oral and maxillofacial surgery in Brisbane teaching hospitals. The final year of study provides external clinical experience. Students will be rotated to a variety of State Government health clinics throughout Queensland, including rural, school, hospital and community clinics.

Placement courses
The final year of the BDSc program involves 34 weeks (2 semesters) of clinical placement in State Government health clinics throughout Queensland, including rural, school, hospital and community clinics. These clinics are located in districts such as Ipswich, Gold Coast, Logan, Redcliffe, Kawana, Nambour, Caboolture, Mackay, Maryborough, Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Charters Towers, Cairns and Townsville. Students will incur varying travel and accommodation costs depending upon clinical placement and location.

Honours is a modified program of study in year 4 and 5, with entry based on grade point average.

Careers
Qualified dentists have the choice of various employment fields:
- Private practice. Once registered with the appropriate Dental Board, dentists can enter private practice on their own behalf. Alternatively, they may work as an assistant with an established practitioner, join a partnership or work as locum tenens.
- Government public health In Queensland, there are salaried positions available in government and school dental clinics.
- Defence force Graduates may enter the Navy, Army or Air Force as dental officers on short service or permanent basis.

Program rules for the Bachelor of Dental Science
To complete the Bachelor of Dental Science
To fulfil the requirements of the Bachelor of Dental Science, a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.
Students are required to obtain #80 from the BDSc List. Refer to BDSc rules for further information.
