Why study the Bachelors of Journalism/Arts?

Journalism is an exciting occupation that allows you to meet many different kinds of people and to travel. The basis of journalism is information - discovering, collecting, assembling, analysing and presenting information. To do this effectively, journalists require highly developed skills in language, a good understanding of the media, an interest in current affairs and a broad general knowledge. By also studying the BA, students graduate with highly developed skills in written communication, problem-solving, critical thinking and interpersonal understanding. The BA allows students to choose from a wide variety of majors to either complement their journalism studies (such as Economics, International Relations, Public Policy or Popular Music) or to broaden their knowledge in another field (such as a language, Criminology or Psychology), thus expanding their opportunities to work in different areas of journalism.

What you can do with a Bachelors of Journalism/Arts

Careers

Graduates from our dual Journalism/Arts program work in Australia and overseas within a wide range of print and broadcast media organisations at metropolitan, national and regional levels. Career opportunities are found in web and multimedia publications, specialty interest magazines, marketing and public relations, and freelancing. Many employers, especially in large organisations, look for the additional skills an Arts degree provides as these graduates have a broad, flexible education to complement their journalism studies.

Program rules for the Bachelors of Journalism/Arts

To complete the Bachelors of Journalism/Arts

To fulfil the requirements of the Bachelors of Journalism/Arts, a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.

A student is required to obtain #64 comprising:

  • #32 from the BA Course List comprising -
      (i) 2 majors; or
      (ii) an extended major; and the balance from courses in
      Part A or Part B or a combination of both; or
      (iii) a major and 2 minors;
    and
  • #32 from the BJ List including:
    • (i) #16 from Group 1; and
    • (ii) #16 from Group 2.
