Why study the Bachelor of Arts (Honours)?

The BA (honours) degree develops core skills and knowledge in theory and research in the humanities and social sciences. The program is based on a combination of coursework and a research project in the chosen field of study. Its objective is to produce graduates who will be able to think clearly, flexibly and critically, and be able to weigh up evidence and arguments and make rational choices. Graduates should be able to express themselves effectively, both orally and in writing; be able to work cooperatively in a team; and be able to demonstrate a depth of understanding in one or more fields of knowledge. The Honours Program also prepares students for further study at the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) level.

Please note the Psychology and Music specialisations have an intake in semester 1 only.

What you can do with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours)

Careers

Many employers, especially in large organisations, value the skills an Arts (Honours) degree provides and will specify an honours degree as desirable in their selection criteria. Apart from content knowledge, employers and professionals value both the reliability and capacity for independent work, and the skill at writing substantial reports which are demonstrated by successful completion of Honours. In the face of unprecedented change and uncertainty at both a local and global level, organisations are seeking graduates who can think critically and react positively to these changes. Students with a BA (Honours) are in the ideal position to meet this challenge with their ability to think independently, reason logically, and communicate clearly.

Program rules for the Bachelor of Arts (Honours)

To complete the Bachelor of Arts (Honours)

To fulfil the requirements of the Bachelor of Arts (Honours), a student must complete the requisite number of courses chosen from the course list in accordance with the Program Rules.

An honours student must complete the program requirements for the field set out in Part H of the BA List and approved by the Executive Dean and head of school. Students are required to undertake a research thesis combined with a selection of courses from the relevant field of studies.
