Why study Sociology?
Sociology is the study of society, and it provides you with a deep understanding of social change, identity, power and social complexity. Thinking sociologically involves identifying social rather than individual explanations for social problems such as poverty, unemployment, inequality and disadvantage. Sociology asks critical questions about why society is organised in particular ways; who benefits from this state of affairs; who is disadvantaged by it; and how we might work together for a better world. By studying sociology you will learn research methods to collect and analyse data to answer these questions and produce explanations about how the social world works. A Sociology minor will give you a range of tools including how to understand societal change, how to approach complex social problems, and how to deal with ambiguity and different versions of reality. You will gain a more critical understanding of the use and effects of power and learn to communicate effectively across a range of media. These are essential skills and are valued by employers across all industries.
