Why study Rural and Remote?
The scope of practice for registered nurses in rural and remote locations differs from that of their urban-based colleagues. This practice differential arises from their relative geographical and professional isolation and their reduced access to support services. In addition, the relatively poor health status of many rural and remote communities coupled with limited health personnel increases the demand for master's prepared registered nurses with advanced understanding of health assessment, diagnosis and management of the health care needs of people in rural and remote communities. Graduates will learn how to manage the care of individual and groups through implementation of health management protocols and clinical care guidelines. Graduates will engage in collaborative practice with other health professionals located in either the community or a distant centre to achieve optimal, culturally relevant outcomes. Graduates will be eligible for endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner with the Queensland Nursing Council.
