Why study Public Policy?
The major in public policy will give students in-depth understanding of how society uses power, institutions and ideas to solve collective problems. It will provide students with in-depth understanding of the role of individual and collective action in solving complex problems, components of the policy process, the role of evidence in the production and dissemination of knowledge, and institutions and institutional landscapes and how they provide context for public policy. It will give students in-depth knowledge of the ethics of public service and how governments work. Graduates of this major will be able to apply different analytical lenses to decision making in public policy, lead and innovate in public policy development and delivery, assess and evaluate policy and the feasibility of policy alternatives, model decision making and policy change, demonstrate excellent communication and presentation skills, and translate learning into policy, engagement and impact. Graduates of this major will be adaptive, committed to public service broadly defined, active, engaged and participatory citizens, and able to appreciate and value diversity.
