Why study Oral Medicine?
Oral Medicine is the dental specialty that bridges the gap between dentistry and medicine. It is largely clinically based and includes all areas of medicine and dentistry where that relationship exists. It is a challenging and rewarding specialty where the candidates are exposed to a large range of medical and dental conditions. It includes rotations in oncology, dermatology, pain diagnosis and management, sleep medicine and soft and hard tissue pathology including salivary gland disorders. Graduates will often work in a multidisciplinary environment to ensure the best outcomes for patients and this is an important component of the program.
On successful completion of the ADC accredited, three year full-time program, national graduates may apply to the Dental Board of Australia for specialist registration. There may also be the opportunity through memoranda of understanding the University has with the RACDS to obtain the FRACDS (Oral Medicine special stream) and similarly with the OMAA to be awarded full fellowship of the Academy and both may be used as post-nominals.
