Why study Optimisation and Operations Research?

Optimisation and operations research applies mathematical techniques to find the best possible solutions to real-world problems. This major equips you with essential skills in both discrete and continuous optimisation, enabling advanced problem-solving, decision-making, and analytical thinking. You will learn to model complex systems, optimise processes, and make data-driven decisions, applying mathematical techniques to solve real-world problems in industries such as logistics, finance, healthcare, and engineering. With a focus on both theoretical understanding and practical applications, you'll gain the skills needed to work in areas like supply chain management, operations planning, and decision analytics . This major prepares you for diverse careers in business, engineering, and government, where optimising operations is key to success. You may also choose to combine this major with a minor in bioinformatics, computational science, computer science, physics or statistics to broaden your expertise.
