Why study Mechatronic Engineering?
The BE(Hons) (program code: 2342) has been discontinued from 2020, as the program has undergone a restructure and has a new program code for students commencing in 2021.
Students commencing prior to 2021, should follow the course and program information for previous years . It is recommended that students go to the transition checklists for course information, as a number of courses may now be renamed, recoded or unavailable due to the program re-structure in 2021. Approved substitutions for your courses can be found in the relevant checklist .
Pre-2021 Students wanting to follow the 2021 structure will be required to program change and should seek academic advice prior to requesting the change.
If you commenced the BE(Hons) from 2021 onwards please follow the 2021 structure.
What you can study
This major provides a broad-based education in the basic principles of electrical, mechanical and computer engineering. A broad range of electives cover areas including engineering analysis and design; engineering mechanics; dynamics and automatic control; signals and communication; electrical hardware and computer software.

Employment opportunities
Mechatronic engineers possess the core skills of mechanical engineers and electrical engineers. Their knowledge enables them to solve a wide range of mechanical, electrical and software problems, allowing them to participate in and lead multidisciplinary design teams. Mechatronic engineers are employed by product developers and manufacturers, large and small, by the mining industry, by the aerospace and defence sectors, and by the government and industry research groups. Wherever there is potential for improvement through the integration of computer and electrical hardware with mechanical systems there is a need for mechatronic engineers. Opportunities also exist for graduates to form their own companies early in their careers.
