Employment opportunities
University research laboratories, research institutes, hospital medical research laboratories, state departments of agriculture and state departments of health. Similarly, quarantine departments, departments of natural resources or fisheries, university laboratories involved in terrestrial or marine ecology and species conservation are all beginning to use genetics as a central part of their studies.
Whether you are interested in discovering medically significant genes, developing diagnostics for human disease, developing more productive and disease-resistant crop plants or domestic animals, conserving endangered species of wildlife or understanding changes to populations being conserved, a genetics major will enhance your prospects of employment.
Currently, there is a shortage of geneticists with computational bioinformatics skills. Opportunities exist internationally for individuals with strong statistical and programming qualifications.
